Good morning everyone! I have a super duper quick post today to kick off vintage Hard Candy week - the fugly cremes!! These polishes are two of the ugliest in my entire collection, yet somehow I have great affinity for them. The colors are Hot Rod and Shag, both from Hard Candy's Fall 1997 line that consisted of unusual creme colors. Not only were these polishes ugly, the application was a nightmare. They were suuuuuuper duper runny, and I flooded pretty much every single one of my cuticles. So I have to apologize for these swatches, they are kind of messy. But despite the fugliness and the horrible application, these polishes are essential for my Hard Candy collection and I'm glad that I have them!
Here's 2 coats of Hard Candy Hot Rod, an orange leaning mustard yellow.
And here's 2 coats of Hard Candy Shag, a lovely greyed-out puke green creme. Enjoy!
Despite their messiness and non-skin flattering shades, I can't help but love them! What do you guys think?
Thanks for stopping by and see you all tomorrow for more vintage Hard Candy goodness!
Oh yeah, they're JUST DISGUSTING.*
ReplyDelete* BEAUTIFUL. I love them on you!
LOL! Thanks Rach!
DeleteI loooove Shag! They both look maj on you =)
ReplyDeleteThanks Anna!! Glad you're digging them!
DeleteI love both of these! Yay for fuglies!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like them! Somtimes polishes can be so ugly that they are awesome!
DeleteSoooooooo ugly and soooooo perfect. I love colors like this. That stinks about the formula, though! But what do you mean, messy swatches? They look flawless to me!
ReplyDeleteThanks Madeline!! I knew you would love them =)
DeleteI love fugly colors! These are great swatches!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I'm glad you like them =)
DeleteThey're gorgeous but too bad about the application!! Look fab on ya :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Vicky! Glad you like them =)
DeleteI think they are both beautiful. The first one looks like Desert Sun, China Glaze. The second one is a nice pastel sage green. My question is Who are these people who still have these old Hard Candies that are selling them on eBay? Did they intentionally hang on to them for all these years?
ReplyDeleteGlad you like them!! That is an excellent question, it's probably collectors selling off their collections because I never really see more than one of the good ones at a time. There are some Hard Candy colors that are always seen in large quantities on eBay (such as Pixie) and those were probably acquired from dead stock or closeouts. But yeah, the really good ones hardly ever pop up anymore!
DeleteGreat, thanks, now i have a taste for soft caramel candy!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Glad to be of service =) Now you've got me wanting some too!
DeleteAh, the "so fugly they're pretty" polishes! I actually like these, bummer that the application is terrible :/
ReplyDeleteIndeed!! I don't mind too much about the formula issues since these are vintage polishes but they were definitely a pain to swatch!
DeleteI don't know if I could pull it off, but they look lovely on you!
ReplyDeleteI actually really, really love Shag. LOL - what does that say about me?!
ReplyDeleteLOL well I'm glad you like it! It's not a bad color at all, just different =)
DeleteI want so badly to get my hands on some vintage hard candy. Hot rod is my faveeee. My dad really had a hot rod this color. Beautiful! Time to go stalk eBay<3
ReplyDeleteThat's so awesome that your dad had a hot rod that color! There's definitely a few up on eBay right now, I hope you can find some that you like! Pixie is always readily available, its one of my fave HC glitter topcoats =)
Deletegreen creme looks nice on you...I was not sure it wd suit anyone:)
ReplyDeleteThank you Emm!
Deletelove the green one :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you like!! It's a good one =)
DeleteI don't hate them, they are beautiful in themselves, but they don't fit many skin tones LOL
ReplyDeleteThey're definitely not for everyone =)
DeleteFugly polish perfection. Hot Rod is dreamy! Your swatches look great, love!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!! They really are dreamy =)
Delete1997? Wow, I'm impressed these colors lasted so long, bad formula and all!
ReplyDeleteI know, right?! All of my vintage Hard Candy polishes are in excellent shape!
DeleteI love the second one :)
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a good one! Glad you like =)
DeleteI think these are really pretty colors!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I'm glad you like them =)
DeleteI have a polish thats a dupe (nearly) for the top polish and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I wear it but only when I'm not going anywhere because I think people will ask me what the hell colour am I wearing! Now that I see you wearing it and proclaiming love for the fugly colours, I am gonna wear it with pride :D
ReplyDeleteLOL I was wearing Hot Rod yesterday and I definitely got a weird look from the lady at the drive thru pharmacy =) I am definitely of the conviction that everyone should wear what they love! Definitely wear it with pride!
DeleteOkay, what does it say about me that I love these? They are right up my alley!
ReplyDeleteHaha it just means that you like things that are awesome =)
DeleteThe puke green I actually love! The top one though? By rights that is uuurrrrgly!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like Shag! And yes, Hot Rod isn't for everyone =)
DeleteThe fugly colors....lol! I have colors like that and end up liking them! These look pretty nice! :D
ReplyDeleteLol I always end up loving my fugly colors! Glad you like =)
DeleteColors like this are my favorite. I'm in love with both, so rich, so gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThese both are definitely right up your alley! These kind of colors always look fantastic on you!
DeleteMan, I commented but my crappy connection ate it. I love love LOVE these. Funny how back in the day no one but HC or UD would touch these kinds of shades and now everyone is doing them!
ReplyDeleteI know right? We wouldn't be where we are in nail polish land today without Hard Candy and Urban Decay. They were true innovators!
DeleteI have a thing for fugly polishes as well :)
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not alone =)
DeleteOmg Shag! That's a legit good colour! Can't say the same for Hot Rod though lol, but there is such as thing as ugly pretty!
ReplyDeleteShag really is cool! Hot Rod is definitely an acquired taste =)
DeleteI LOOOVE the green!!! I don't think it's ugly at all. I would totally wear it.
ReplyDeleteHaha I'm glad you like it!!
DeleteI LOVE them both! Probably because they remind me of every kitchen ever from my childhood. Very retro and all kinds of awesome for fall. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, totally old school kitchen colors for sure! Is it wrong that I want an avocado refrigerator? lol!
DeleteHuge fan of fugly colours, I love these!!
ReplyDeleteMeeee too! I'm glad you like =)
DeleteI have a thing for fugly colours: I just adore them! I own a H&M polish called Mustard which is pretty much the same as Hot Rod. I am pretty sure I have nothing like the green one in my stash though :( Now I seriously need to find a dupe for it.
ReplyDeleteI love fugly colors too!!! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a dupe for Shag, I will let you know if I find one!
Deleteomggg i LOVE hot rod!!!! MUST OWN. shag is amazing too!
ReplyDeleteThey are both amazing!!! I hope you can find them one day!
DeleteI really like "gross" colors like this! These are both so pretty!! ^.^
ReplyDeleteI do too!! I'm glad you like them =)
DeleteI wouldn't buy either one of those!
ReplyDeleteLMFAO I love your honesty! They're definitely not for everyone =)
DeleteIm sort of on the fence. Its like a ugly polish thats sort of pretty. LOL
ReplyDeleteExactly! They have that whole ugly-awesome thing going on =)
